2008 Free Agency

Recommended Posts

Here is a link to the unofficial list of 2008 Free Agents. Gotta say the Wild are in the roughest position (Sorry Jeff) with 3 of their top 4 scorers set to become Free Agents (Rolston, Bouchard, Demitra)

Also a list of the Top 12 Most Wanted RFA's according to TSN. Is a team gonna go after one of them?

I am certainly pulling for the Sabs to sign ANY dman they can get their hands on (not named Hatcher).

A little on Marian Hossa's initial thoughts on his upcoming free agency:

I was hoping to read "I'll sign to play with Gaborik for $1.95 if they'd have me." Bummer. :(

Update on the Hossa situation with the Pens:

It's hard to believe that Ryan Malone wouldn't want to try as hard as possible to stay in the Burgh. I just can't see him wanting to leave...

Well, Malone doesn't really have that much tieing him here anymore. I heard somewhere he has a Summer home in Minnesota, and his dad is a scout for Phoenix(?). I could see him entertaining an offer from either of those teams if one exists. I'd be shocked if he goes to Columbus though as rumored.

Well, it's the team he grew up with and loved. If it was me, there's no way I'd want to leave my hometown team that I've watched my whole life. But everyone's different, I guess. Especially when money's involved...money talks. I guess we'll see.

Well Atlanta re-signed Hedberg to be their backup to a multi-year deal. Kinda disappointed in this as he was a disappointment this past season (much like the whole Thrashers team). I figured either give Pavelec a chance or go and get a better backup, but Waddell apparantly really likes Moose. Now they need to get Lehtonen signed.

Malone looks like he will check around after all:

Yeah, I read on TSN that the Penguins were close to trading Malone's negotiating rights to the Blue Jackets and Malone had this to say.

Malone wrote that "If Columbus was smart they wouldn't make the trade" as he fully intends to test the open market on July first.

Not really free agency, but the Ducks told Niedermayer and Selanne they want decisions a lot quicker than they got last year. Niedermayer is gonna announce his decision on Friday.

Not a free agent this year, but the Lightning appear to be close to be locking up Lecavalier to a "lifelong" contract.

Mason traded to St Louis and then Ellis was re-signed to a 2 year deal with the Predators. Good move, Ellis has won at every level he has played at and showed that he can be a quality goalie in the NHL.

I seem to recall the same thing happening last year when the Preds decided that Mason was to be their new starter and they let go their current #1 in Vokoun. Let's see how it works out this time.

Teams can now figure out their plans on what to pay now as the salary cap for the 08/09 season was determined. $56.7 million cap with a $40.7 million floor. Maximum of $11.34 million a year.

It always amazes me at how much the cap climbs each season after the lockout. They factor gate revenue/merchandise sales and what else when it comes to how much the cap is going to rise.

Not sure on all the factors that go into the league revenue to determine the cap, but I know the strengthening of the Canadian Dollar added quite a bit in revenue as the Canadian teams are basically making more money after it is converted.

Pens trade rights to Malone and Gary Roberts to Tampa Bay for a 2009 draft pick:

Sorry to see those guys go. They were both good guys.
