Big day for trades, with the Sharks being pretty busy. Nice pickup with Dan Boyle and they got Brad Lukowich as well. They traded Carle and Wishart to Tampa Bay. They weren't done and dealt Craig Rivet to Buffalo.

Buffalo traded Steve Bernier to the Canucks. Did the Sabres not feel they could resign Bernier?

Wild sign Owen Nolan to a 2 year deal at 2.75 million a year.

As a Wild fan, I have zero feelings about this. After the loss of Rolston, it just leaves me flat. Does Owen have any game left to go with his grittiness and heart?

I thought he looked good as the season wore on in 06-07 with the Coyotes. I was kind of hoping they'd bring him back to the valley. I'm not sure on Calgary last season as I didn't watch them any. Me personally, I think if he shows anything like he did with the Coyotes in 06-07 season, you'll have a good player to watch up there in the Twin Cities.

ZZ- what do you think about the Avs' movement or lack thereof?

Both the Sabres and Thrashers have been disappointing in free agency this offseason to me.

The Sabres have pretty much signed a backup goalie and that is it. The pieces they picked up in the Bernier trade may help, but I don't think it will be all that much.

As for the Thrashers the only person they have really picked up in Hainsey from Columbus and if I am not mistaken he is more of an offensive defenseman which isn't what the Thrashers needed, they needed to work on the defensive side of the puck. Was disappointed in the fact that they let Recchi go as well, he was working well with the team and would have liked to have seen him stick around for another year or two.

Ray Emery off to Russia to play for Mytishchi.

"According to Barry (his agent), Emery had hoped to play in the NHL next season, but received just three calls."

Guess teams just didn't have any interest in him right now.

Federov re-signs with the Caps for 1 year.

Laich re-signs with the Caps for 3 years.

I like the Tucker addition and Raycroft could be a bargain at 1 year for 800K. Me personally, I dig the style that Tucker plays as an agitator. Hopefully Budaj can bounce back after a rough year last year, but if not, I think Raycroft will be a nice addition. I was iffy on them resigning Jose Theodore, he had a good year last year but he had a lot to prove to me overall. The Daniel Tjarnqvist addition is so-so for me. I'm pretty happy that they resigned Liles and Foote, I thought those were two keys moves that needed to be made.

I'm not too happy they lost Finger or Sauer. In the games that I saw this season, Finger really stood out and I liked Sauer's game. I heard on one of the local radio stations here in Phoenix that a Toronto fan is especially fuming over the Finger signing, indicating that the Leafs thought they were getting the player who was lining up against the top players in the West on the PK and PP, this individual did research on the stats of both players and indicated that the Leafs thought the stats belonged to Finger, when they really belonged to Sauer. However, I can't back up that theory, so its kind of hearsay at the moment. If its true, then the Coyotes really got themselves a helluva D-man in Sauer.

I am sorry they lost Brunette, he was pretty effective but I think he can be replaced.

What do you think of your Sabres getting Rivet? I've really liked him when I've watched the Sharks out here. I think he's going to be a good addition for them.

The Sabres DESPERATELY need defensemen and I am generally happy with the addition (and the price). If we can pick up another one then I would be happier. I liked Big Bear and was not happy he was traded for a song but the Sabres are heavy on the wings so it makes sense. I just wish the front office would be more active as I don't think this Sabs team is ECF quality as constituted. They need to get rid of Max and Tim Connelly and get in some quality vets but alas I don't think we will see that happen.

Thanks for the Avs update! I have always been a big fan of Sakic and since I like how Altitude broadcasts the games. Plus, since this is IJ, I really dig those third jerseys with the ties, very sharp.

I had completely forgotten about Tjarnqvist! When he was an Oiler I remember him falling flat several times when they played the Coyotes one night, but asides from having problems with the ice, he seemed like a decent d-man out there. I'm really hoping Sakic returns for one last hurrah. It'd be really weird to see him gone. I think they're in good hands with Stastny, Wolski, and Svatos, as well as guys like Ryan Smyth.

I was really surprised they traded Bernier. I'm still expecting Afinogenov to be dealt myself. Its just time. Any word on Teppo Numminen?

Ha! I see the signing of Demitra by Vancouver has the boards all abuzz. If you read between the lines of his quotes, which are actually quite transparent, he did not like being part of the Wild's defensive system, and it was only made worse by playing him at center and not wing, where he had even less opportunities for scoring.

He's a talented playmaker and left to his own devices, allowed the freedom to be creative and paired with any sort of scorer, will be more than happy to rack up assist after assist all season long, plus add in his usual 20-25 goals as a bonus. I thought Pavol's nickname should be "Pass All" because I've never seen a player pass up more chances to shoot than that guy. Any, and EVERY, two on one with Demitra handling the puck resulted in a pass. It was as pretictable as the sunrise each morning.

Given some freedom and a partner capable of scoring, Vancouver will be quite happy with their investment in a happy and motivated Demitra, something he simply was not under Jacques Lemaire.

Now that he's gone, any chance we can get back Patrick O'Sullivan? Please?

So was I but truth be told, outside of his first amazing game, he was pretty invisible as the season ended.

As for Teppo, every seems to think he is in life-shape but whether he is in hockey shape in another matter. He is being considered nothing more than a 5-6th dman at this point. That does not mean the quality ahead of him is that great, mind you.

The impression I got from the Sabres board was that Bernier had some issues that Wilson and then someone in the Sabres organization had found difficult to deal with it.

Being a Coyote fan, I have a lot of respect for what Teppo has been able to accomplish in his career and I was really pulling for him last year to get the Cup. With that being said, the last thing any of us would want to see is another Jiri Fischer type incident (or worse) happen up in Buffalo. I do hope Teppo is okay and he's had a great career whether or not he returns to the NHL.

I'm hoping the Sabres aren't done this offseason. I'm finding the Sabres boards are pretty interesting about the state of the team. One guy whom I really enjoyed watching when Buffalo came out here to the desert last year was Derek Roy. I've become a fan of him. He really stuck out on the ice and was always trying to get something done, despite that game being an off game for the Sabres and Thibault having a terrible game.

Roy has definitely been a pleasant surprise last season. I think if the Sabs can get one more veteran dman, stop the rotating captaincy and sign Miller to a long term deal, the lads might be settled down enough to snag a 4-5 seed this year. Once in the playoffs, I think they can do some damage but they have to get there first. The first month will be very telling.

Could Pratt fill that vacancy? Hopefully last year gave the guys like Pominville and Roy a chance to step up and evolve as future leaders of the team and that'll help them this year. I'm curious about their prospects for this season.

Pratt, serviceably but sketchy. Not someone I would be happy trotting out in a Game 7.

As for my boy Pommer, he established himself when he wore the C last year and I think he should be given it permanently (especially if they lock him up for the next 5 years or so). I have no idea what to expect from the Sabs this year. Last year, their bad October had me really worried and they really never got over whatever was making them underperform. I think the start of this season will be really telling how the rest of it will play out (moreso than most teams). When does training camp start? I am starved for hockey!

When they announced some of the teams on the local radio station that the Coyotes would be facing again this season, I was very pleased to hear the Sabres are going to be making a return trip out to the valley this year, as will the Maple Leafs. IN fact, there are four games; Washington, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, and Toronto, I'll definitely be making it a point to get tickets for this year. I dig getting to see the Eastern Conference. My goal, as long as I'm down here, is to never miss Buffalo when they come to town, as they come so infrequently.

And I am digging all the WC teams coming east this year. I am already making plans to go to Buffalo for Vancouver and San Jose and of course when they appear here in the City.

I was impressed by how many Sabres fans were out here last year. It was like when the Wings are in town, half the crowd was wearing blue and gold. It was impressive. They have an amazing fanbase down here in the valley. I've seen license plate frames, hats, and t-shirts frequently. I wore my Sabres shirt to the VA Hospital in December for an appointment and got a response.

I'm sure you heard the news about Miller today. That's awesome he's being kept in the fold, I was afraid the Red Wings would get him.

The thing about Buffalo is that the economy has caused a force diaspora effect for all the people leaving WNY. Wherever the Sabs and Bills travel, WNY'ers are there in force. Here in NYC, I help run the NYC Buffalo Sabres Backers and we have full bars for a bunch of games and it is an offshoot of the Bills Backers which has over 1400 members. Apparently, there is a HUGE contingent of fans for the Canes games as 1/2 of WNY moved down to Charlotte over the intervening years.

When I was in the Air Force, I was working on the flightline late one night over at another squadron when I saw someone on the flightline who was with a flightline escort wearing a Mike Peca black Sabres jersey. There were two other Sabres fans that I worked with directly just in the AF alone. One from Buffalo and another had grown up there. I'm impressed with all that I hear about the economy up there that they still have 97% season ticket renewal ratings and draw the crowds they do. In Indianapolis, you'd start seeing empty arenas. Plus, with the Detroit economy, the Red Wings aren't selling out like they once did if you believe the TV broadcasts.

In Buffalo it seems like all they have are bars and sports. Bills and Sabs dominate the landscape out there. With the Sabs finally getting good and the Bills stuck at 7-9, the entertainment dollar is clearly going to the Sabs. I had mini-pack tickets and just missed the renewal deadline one year and now am stuck on a waiting list. Plus, the economy can't go really more south in B-lo than it has so the people don't have too much more belt to tighten.
