JohnnyOnTheSpot
I've been obsessing about this for the past few months, trying to nail down as much info as possible, and I've decided that instead of writing my paper, this would be much more interesting at the moment. There are some holes in here, so it needs more info (from 1993 back). 1993 was the first season I have proof that the Flyers started using this particular font, which was used on the white jerseys up until they were retired in 2010, and also on the orange jerseys used until 2001: This font, in my experiences, cannot be done properly very easily. I have kits from Stahl's, Philly Express (current Flyers customizer), and EPS, which all have very small inconsistencies. The Bs and Rs are the easiest to look at, as they protrude an odd amount. Hell, even Ruberti's screwed up mine initially and used a Stahl's kit because they didn't think they were different. They actually let me route through their computers today and find the font to make me correct kits (not joking, they're really awesome). The black jerseys, introduced in 1997, introduced a new font, which was white on orange. From what I can tell, EPS still uses this font as their current Flyers font, so be careful, because it changes post lockout. The reason it changes is because Ruberti's bought a computer that year and printing software to make them themselves (no joke). There are a few letters to look at to tell the difference. Bs, Rs and Ps will have rectangular cutouts pre lockout, and more squared ones post (I initially thought they were perfect squares, they are not). Also, the center of the Es are shorter post lockout. There are other really small differences, but that's what to look for. Pre: Post: This font is also what's currently being used for the Flyers (squarish ones, however), on both sets of jerseys and Winter Classics. These jerseys use twill nameplates, by the way:
JohnnyOnTheSpot
2008-09 was an interesting year. It was the only year that Ruberti's did the orange jerseys, and brought us a few anomalies. The first set was the butter knife set, evident by the really funky 1s. They used this for two games in 2008. Ruberti did these, and I can verify that they DO have the font package still on their computer: Sets two and three were odd because they feautured the old sleeve numbers, and a smaller border on the back numbers: When Philly Express took them over in 2009, they introduced the thicker border and new sleeve font: The sleeves are annoying. From 1993 (as far as I can tell), through the original Edge uniforms and the two sets of oranges in 2008-09, the numbers were ones in the top of the following picture. PE brought with them a new sleeve font, which is actually the exact same as the back numbers. Previously, they were a squished version. The easiest way to tell is the 6/8/9 family; look at the cutouts, if they're square, they're old, if rectangular, they're new. The new orange/white jerseys use the new fonts, as well as the Winter Classics. Lastly, here's a list of who can do what: 1993-2007 whites - Ruberti's fully, EPS can do numbers, PE can do back numbers only. 1993-2001 oranges - Same as above. 1997-2007 blacks - Ruberti's and EPS fully (99% sure about EPS), PE can do numbers and font, but don't expect proper font material. 2002-2007 orange alternates - Ruberti's only, I hear no one else has the font and I can verify they have the original files. 2007-2010 whites - Same as old whites, just go to Ruberti's. 2007-2010 blacks - Same as above. 2008 weird oranges - Ruberti's, although EPS claims they can do them. 2008 oranges - Ruberti's. 2009-present oranges/whites - PE 2010/12 Winter Classic - PE. It's important to note that Ruberti's has the font to do any Flyers names along with the material, but I doubt they'll do the sleeves properly. JohnnyOnTheSpot
Here is my limited Phantoms knowledge. On the purples and whites until the Edges kicked in, they used the Flyers font used around 1993: The blacks use the Flyers font used on the blacks pre lockout: The Edges screw everything up. I have pictures of them using the pre-lockout black font and the post-lockout black font, even in the same game! Here's an 07-08 using pre-lockout fontL And here's the same year, different font (post lockout): Both jerseys did this. Just for torture, here is the SAME GAME using DIFFERENT FONTS!!! **feints** Look at the Rs (can't hotlink, sorry): http://www.flickr.co...157607230462989 Just in case you're like me and obsess, Giroux used the new font on both white and black, JVR used the old font, and so did Briere. I spent HOURS finding proof of this, if you want it let me know, otherwise just trust me. Here's G wearing the new one: http://www.flickr.co...62989/lightbox/ And there we have it. If anyone has more info, let me know and I'll add it! I've added some comparison shots since I just got my plates from Ruberti's today to show what I mean with the font differences. We'll start with the font used for the white jerseys up until 2010...my personal favorite to pick apart. Top is PE's, middle is Ruberti's (correct), and bottom is EPS: EPS and PE are identical. I know Stahl's does them this way, too, since Ruberti's initially gave me that until I yelled at them lol. The differences are super subtle, but there. PS, PE used literally like a stocking for mine, complete garbage. EPS did use an Edge plate. Next up is the black font used post lockout to now (just single layer now). Top is EPS (began to strip it) on Edge material, middle is Ruberti's (correct), bottom is PE again on nylon. EPS is wrong because that's the pre-lockout font. PE's is correct since they still use this font, but on horrid material. The big tell in this font package is the stubby E and the R/B/Ps being square versus rectangular. Lastly we have some Phantoms. The top one is from Ruberti's using the Flyers pre-lockout font, which was used for the Phantoms, just not Giroux (it's really stupid). Middle is Ruberti's, correct, using post-lockout Flyers font. The bottom is EPS', which looks a hair too thin, but is also on incorrectly colored airknit (they don't have Edge material).

The Next One
Wow, great work! This really helps me, especially the picture of Giroux in the Phantoms jersey since I picked one up from the RCS sale. I need to get a current Flyers jersey to get it done up as Giroux as well, there's a big autograph signing in a few weeks.

I found some STH's album from that year who happened to take like 600 pics a game. Needless to say it took a while :/ He also used the same font on the black, which I've confirmed. I saw that signing, I'm so friggin' jealous

Yeah, it's a huge signing, but it's gonna cost me a bundle with all the stuff I'm buying to get signed, jerseys, sticks, McFarlanes. Good thing I just got my bonus from work. FlyGuyFan
Posting pics of my Giroux WC size 54 the first one is a before and after shot of the nameplate issue I mentioned in the WC thread: this one is what NHL shop did: Here is the new nameplate put on by PE: [/img] again, very happy with the work. now i need to get the right numbers put on the jersey. Unfortunately, NHL shop did my customization and it was completely wrong. PE won't stip the jersey because it was embroidered on, so if i want the right numbers I am gonna have to strip it myself. I hope I don't ruin it, but I can't stand that it is not the on-ice numbering. Just don't get why the online shop of the NHL would have a different, generic font lettering for retail sale which are smaller and different than the numbers being worn on the ice buy the players. Here are some other pics of the jersey, lemme know what you guys think (Johnnyonthespot, I share your number fonts obsession. It keeps me up at night, literally, which is why I'm sending this post at 2:30 in the morning on a Tuesday! Your mindful and constructive criticizms/suggestions would be greatly appreciated): [/img]
akteon
Boo! Flyers suck! Err, sorry it's a reflex. Seriously awesome job as someone with an unhealthy font fetish* myself I really appreciate the detailed analysis you did Johnny - great job. * I recently sat through a 90-minute documentary on the Helvetica font and actually enjoyed it. JohnnyOnTheSpot
Posting pics of my Giroux WC size 54 Good work getting the correct A and nameplate. Here's the thing, your numbers look fine to me. Outline maybe a hair too thin, but not sure. When you get home, measure them for me. Measure the overall height of the number, and the width of the border. I ordered a set from PE for my blank and I can tell you if yours are accurate, and I have 28 to boot. Do the same with the sleeves. At first glance, they look fine though. Also, if you copy from Photobucket with image tags, don't click insert image on here or everything gets completely screwed up. What I'm now doing is ordering kits. PE will sell you just a kit, but it may take some prodding with the Skate Zone. I go to the Northeast one. Once I order a kit, when it comes in I determine it's accuracy, THEN have Mike (Brilliant) on here put it on. He does fantastic work. I have 5 coming back from him soon. EDIT: I'm looking at yours again, and the black is definitely too thick. Here's mine, from PE: And here's yours: Seriously, Mike will strip it and redo the kit. Obviously you will have to pay to have it stripped, but there's literally never been a problem with a strip job I've gotten from him. My orange Giroux (that I can't believe isn't in my avatar currently, go to my Photobucket) was originally an NHL Shop done Bob. Literally no trace of that. Haha I understand man, I'd be doing the same thing. Thank you, it's embarrassing how obsessed I've become. The two guys at Ruberti's said they learned because of me haha, the people that made the jersey for 25 years learned something. Yikes. You show me a documentary on block font, and I am in the chair the whole time hahaha.
s3x
Yea, the black lettering is too thick on the NHL shop job.
