sungod661
After reading this article http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=461971 I realized we are unfortunately headed sooner then later towards the dreaded soccer path of having company names on our favourite teams jerseys. I know some may think that's cool. but i am not one of them!!! i do not look forward to buying my favourite teams jersey and having a pepsi or viagra patch on it. This is again all about money (isn't everything). I Soccer jersey are a mockery to the sport but that has not slowed down sales or popularity with fans. I just don't like the fact i am going to one day bring my kids to the arena to watch our favourite team and i will have to explain why they have a viagra patch on our jerseys or explain that our team is not called the VAGISIL CANADIENS. Anyway i have vented carry on!
Silverback53
In Europe we are used to advertising on sports jerseys. I'd like to see less advertisement on the jerseys. In the US there's advertisement everywhere EXCEPT on the sports jerseys and I think that is very honourable. I always felt that if I buy a jersey with advertisement they should pay me for wearing THEIR company name.
TMLFAN
The logos on the sweaters are sacred. Put advertisements wherever the hell you want but leave them off the jerseys. How can you replace the maple leaf or Habs logo or Blackhawks logo with a big mcdonalds patch or whatever? Once that happens you've essentially killed the history and tradition that's tied to the team, jersey, and logo. I for one would never buy one. I don't think they'd be replacing the main logos... there would just be advertising logos around them. By no means do I want them to have ads... but its definitely not going to be a replacing situation.
Flyers845
Practice jerseys sure why not. But never on a game sweater that's just crazy. My dad is 61 and he still hates the advertisements on the boards.
Cygnus X-1
God no. If that happens I'd seriously consider not getting another jersey. I can't stomach those soccer and international hockey jerseys.

hockeyjerseyssuck
I don't want ads, but if it is just a small patch like on that jersey, it wouldn't be that bad. If we're talking about removing team crests, and putting Ronald McDonald's head on the jersey, that'd suck. Although, Vagisil Canadiens is very appropriate. Kaiser416
if 1 patch = $4 mil per team, why stop at 1?
hockeyjerseyssuck
if 1 patch = $4 mil per team, why stop at 1? On the bright side, the Islanders could brag about being ahead of the curve.
jolmari
I doubt they'd remove the team crests-that wouldn't make any sense and would just be silly. At first they'll most likely add one ad as a patch, just like in AHL. And then maybe start to add the amount of those patches gradually until the whole jerseys are covered by ads like in Europe. I, like many others here, prefer the jerseys clean without ads since those clean jerseys are so rare nowadays.
chow_hound
The difference with Soccer is a team crest always was a 2"x2" logo on an otherwise empty jersey and sewn inconspicuously in the top corner. The marketing space was valuable and honestly for soccer they werent going to embroider a full size team logo in the middle of the jersey that is a 12"x12" nhl size crest as the weight and bulkiness would impede the players motion. So in soccer a silkscreened advertisement makes perfect sense. Now when you look at hockey and think about the size of the front crest and existing team patches and sleeve numbers and realize the "white space" is already limited it means that most likely you will see sponsor patches either replace shoulder patches or they will do a sponsor below the back numbers. It cant be front chest at all due to team patches and captaincy letters and the front logo. I think if the NHL goes for this they will get supreme backlash but in the end wont care because they will make a KILLING on Advertising revenue. I am 100% against it for the aesthetics. Cygnus X-1
they will do a sponsor below the back numbers. This is my fear. So tacky.
DJ Rhea
I really don't want to see this. I wouldn't buy a jersey with a sponsor on. I love the clean look of NHL jerseys.
mfitz804
Its ugly. And I am 100% certain I am not more likely to by Vagisil because the Canadiens have it on their jersey.
Big A HG
This is the best ad on a hockey jersey right now has to be this...the double sports logo.
Cash
I love everyone freaking out thinking the NHL is going to go full euro style on the advertisements I mean if the AHL hasn't yet why freak out I mean that league makes no money ( ok not sure about that ) The single patch like the AHL teams is not that bad but the second they start doing sponser themed jerseys then no thanks I can only think of the Providence Bruins Dunkin Donuts jersey a few years back with the orange and pink stripes
chow_hound
Lets say it this way. Once the NHL approves sponsor patches on jerseys and they realize the revenue potential (for reference the NFL makes over $1Billion annual in Sponsorship alone. Literally just talking about money from companies to say ____ product, the official supplier of the NFL). So once the NHL gets 30 teams who all are going to wear at least 1 sponsor and for further reference, the most established well known teams will be getting Millions per season from the sponsor, this generates 30-300 million in combined new annual revenue (at 1 sponsor per team). In Soccer Man United is getting almost $80 million from chevrolet to simply wear the logo on the jersey. So the big difference between AHL and NHL is because AHL has literally NO marketing power globally compared to the NHL and big time National companies arent going to put their logo on a small time farm team with local exposure only. Get ready for it. Sponsors are coming before 2020.

DiscoStu
Lol. On an aside. Pretty sure it would become the "Molson Canadiens". That is a given... And much easier to explain to children I was thinking the same thing. Most NHL owners also own companies, so we would also have the Little Caesar's Red Wings and the Comcast Flyers, heck, it would make it easier to remember which company owns which sports team. TMLFAN
The Rogers/Bell Maple Leafs. See, the Leafs are already up to two patch's.
DiscoStu
I wish MLSE would adopt this logo. Then the Leafs could put it on their jerseys to remind everyone that they are actually The Hockey Team Formerly Known As The Maple Leafs. Nas
Corporate logos do not belong on professional sports league jerseys, except the jersey manufacturer logo. Let's hope this never happens. God forbid it gets to the level of the Austrian Hockey League. I'm sorry you had to see all that.
