Spice Things Up! ~Unique Jersey Idea~

On October 7, 2001 at Madison Square Garden in New York the New York Rangers faced the Buffalo Sabres in a special game. Both teams wore their jerseys with the words "New York" positioned diagonally across the front in the wake of the 9-11 attacks on the World Trade Center less than a month earlier. Each player had one jersey except for four Sabres who had a backup jerseys made for the community relations department. This is one of those game-issued jerseys.

Man, what I wouldn't give to have one of those jerseys; from EITHER team. I've been searching for one on eBay(yeah, right) for the longest time but I know I'd never be able to afford it anyway.

I'll never forget that night, either. I remember I actually had my season tickets that night but my parents didn't want me to go into the city. I ended up going to the Giants game in the afternoon(WSH - W) and then having to watch the game at home. I don't think anyone had dry eyes when Messier put that fire helmet on.

Then when Leetch scored the winner it OT, I literally jumped out of my chair screaming and burst into tears at the same time. I really wish I would've gone to the game...instead I went to the next game against the Caps and newly appointed captain Jaromir Jagr. The Rangers got spanked 5-2 in Dan Blackburn's NHL debut...yes, I'm a hockey geek!

This is where my creative side kicks in, and i figure out how easy it would be to have one of these made up. Both are easily done with a blank jersey from ice jerseys. The problem is the Rangers jersey while unique to the game, isn't all that different from what they have worn over the years, so it probably wouldn't be as appreciated at frist glace as the Sabres version. Really, a white version for the Rangers with New York and then black for the Sabers would have been a good way to go, as both jump out more to the casual fan. The Sabres is also probably easier due to the fact the New York is spelled out with the player name font, while the Rangers is done with their classic logo font, which I don't know how easy it is to come across. Now the real problem for me is finding a Porltand Winter Hawk to tie it into, which leaves only Mark Messier who only played one playoffs for us back in 80s, so its not even a strong tie in. Too bad, if there had been a way to do it with the Sabres, I would have been down.

You couldn't still find a blank Sabres to have that done? I wonder how easy the shoulder patches would be to find on ebay.

I think that the Rangers version is still on my radar to have made some time. Better add that to my wantlist while I'm thinking about it.

Does anyone have any links to articles or boxscores from that game?

I could, infact I think the Sabers would be a heck of alot easier, its just that I'm getting to the point where I'm making the overall theme off my collection to be Portland Winter Hawk related, and I cant find a way to make a Sabres from that game fall into that category.
