How the New Divisions Would Have Affected Playoffs

Ok, so I'm really bored at work, so I went through the rest of the league. Here's a summary of the 4 Conferences, since the lockout:

- The Flyers make the playoffs 5 times (same)

- The Penguins make the playoffs 5 times (same)

- The Devils make the playoffs 5 times (same)

- The Rangers make the playoffs 4 times (down 1)

- The Capitals make the playoffs 3 times (down 1)

- The Hurricanes make the playoffs 1 time (down 1)

- The Islanders make the playoffs 1 time (same)

- The Sabres make the playoffs 6 times (up 2)

- The Canadiens make the playoffs 5 times (same)

- The Bruins make the playoffs 4 times (same)

- The Senators make the playoffs 4 times (same)

- The Lightning make the playoffs 3 times (same)

- The Maple Leafs make the playoffs 1 time (up 1)

- The Panthers make the playoffs 1 time (up 1)

- The Sharks make the playoffs 6 times (same)

- The Ducks make the playoffs 5 times (same)

- The Canucks make the playoffs 4 times (same)

- The Flames make the playoffs 4 times (same)

- The Coyotes make the playoffs 2 times (same)

- The Avalanche make the playoffs 2 times (down 1)

- The Kings make the playoffs 1 time (down 1)

- The Oilers make the playoffs 0 times (down 1... No Oilers-Canes Cup Final)

- The Red Wings make the playoffs 6 times (same)

- The Predators make the playoffs 5 times (same)

- The Stars make the playoffs 4 times (up 1)

- The Blackhawks make the playoffs 3 times (same)

- The Wild make the playoffs 2 times (same)

- The Blues make the playoffs 2 times (up 1)

- The Blue Jackets make the playoffs 1 time (same)

- The Jets make the playoffs 1 time (same)

I can do playoff matchups too if anyone is really that interested.

Can I have your job? Just kidding.

That's interesting. I'm interested to see how things will pan out with Bettman's new realignment plan. There are some decent articles on Yahoo! Sports NHL covering it.

I think it's going to make the "conferences" more competitive, and obviously place a much greater emphasis on "intraconference" games. Good to see some of the old, classic rivalries will be sticking around.

  • 4 months later...

I'm interested to know if this season would have been any different. I am half bummed, half happy next year will be the same schedule. Bummed, because no one needs PHX 3x a year, or CBJ 2x, but happy, because I think that the current divisions slightly benefit my Kings.

Ok... here's how it would have gone this year:

Division A Playoffs:

- NYR vs. NJD

- PIT vs. PHI

- WSH would have missed the playoffs

Division B Playoffs:

- BOS vs. BUF

- FLA vs. OTT

Division C Playoffs:

- VAN vs. LA

- PHX vs. SJ

Division D Playoffs:

- STL vs. CHI

- NSH vs. DET

So the playoff teams would actually be the same, except for a Buffalo for Washington swap. Interesting that 3 of the 8 playoff matchups would have still been identical.

Interesting. Thanks for the breakdown, dsl.

I think this new system would create more complaining for teams who are hovering around the #8 position. This would make the # of points required to make the postseason increase. I remember several years ago, teams that had mid-80s # of points qualified and now it's near 90+ points! That's amazing how competitive it's becoming. I think it's GREAT for the game to see all the races at the end of the season on who makes it and who doesn't.
