Well this sucks....

Recommended Posts

I know it's mostly a sports forum, but I feel like venting. About a month ago, I was getting out of the car, and I put my foot down on the sidewalk and felt an instant shooting pain in my calf, couldn't move, couldn't walk etc. I thought it was a charlie horse because it felt like a knot in my leg, but 4 hours later it was just going away. About a week ago I felt the same pain while I was walking to the car from the campus and it continued for the rest of the day until I went to bed some 12 hours later.

So naturally I go to the doctor today, he does a few tests and it turns out I've been walking around for a month on a torn calf muscle. The worst part is that I umpire baseball, and it's something I enjoy (and it gives me money to finance my free time) - We open in a month, and in all likelihood I won't be able to be on the field. Hell, I may be done for the season before it even starts. I don't know how bad it is, but as with any tear, surgery is always a possibility. I have to go back to the doctor in a week, and then for an MRI to find out how bad it is.

What kills me is I did this stepping out of the car. 20 years of bowling 3 days a week, 52 weeks a year pretty much nonstop with the worst injury being a little tendonitis in my shoulder and I tear a calf muscle getting out of the F(&^*** car!? UGH!

That sucks. If you undergo surgery, you can buy a jersey

Haha, I wish. If I need surgery, that takes away my money-making for the summer, which takes away my ability to buy jerseys :(

I had a partial tear 3 and half years ago doing a routine training exercise at work, it felt like an elastic snapped when it happened. I went to see my doctor who sent me for an MRI (private clinic). I had 75% of my ligament torn (likely due to dehydration according to the MD). Surgery is rare in these types of injuries because the tendon tends to regenerate itself rather quickly. I could not run for 2 months, Then an additional 2 months of running with a slight pain (i tired not to push it). I did 2 months of Physio (the massage part was enjoyable). Luckily it happened at work so physic was paid for.

Ice it everyday and avoid pushing recovery too fast. You will be surprised how quickly you will recover. if this happened a month ago in all likelihood with some physic you will be good in a month or so.

Yeah, doc told me I'm definitely going to need physical therapy. Luckily my tendons and ligaments are fine, it's a muscle that's got a tear. Doc told me to wrap it in hot washcloths twice a day, gave me an anti-inflammatory and told me no gym, no running, no unnecessary walking (which gets me a parking pass for the main campus rather than having to park in the student lot and walk 4 blocks) and we'll see what the MRI shows.

I should probably play the sympathy card with the cute Puerto Rican girl I've been walking to the bus on my break for a couple weeks.

You can probably DH with that.

Haha. No, that wouldn't work either. I couldn't hit when I was playing, that's why I was a catcher.

That sucks- but to turn a negative into a positive, totally play it up with the chick.

Which anti-inflammatory did he give you?

Haha, yes. I'll be seeing her on Thursday when she's across the hall from me :D. He gave me Modic. Hopefully it works because I need to get my Arse on the field this summer so I can make some money.

Well, now I'm totally shot in the Arse. Went for a follow-up yesterday, doc told me I can start walking normally instead of favoring the leg, and then when I got home I moved the wrong way and that was the end of walking. Now I'm on crutches and I need an MRI.

This is going to be a fun summer, I can see it already /sarcasm/

Geez, move to Philly like the rest of the old injured and tired. With the state of the Flyers and Phillies teams the doctors and specialists are all sporting new BMWs and Mercedes.

In all seriousness, Get better...

LOL no I always thought all the old decrepit cripples were in Florida? On the bright side, now I have proof of pain, which makes the sympathy card that much more viable.

Guess it could always be worse, my junk could be broke.
