ZoomZoom18
I've not caught any Sabres games yet this year either, but what a start! I'm really glad to see Vanek is on a roll. How's Derek Roy doing? Last I heard, not too well to start off.

How's Derek Roy doing? Last I heard, not too well to start off. It was hilarious to watch them talk about Roy on Versus. The guy has been non-existent on offense this year. However, he backchecks and the VS guys took that and said he was one of the best players on the ice!!! I think he will come around but with Vanek and Paille and Rivet playing so well, there is less pressure on Roy to produce.

SabreFaninNYC
How's Rivet looking? I am a big fan of that pickup for the Sabres. Tremendous! The guy is tough and a good puck moving defenseman. Definitely a great pickup. Sadly he is out 2+ weeks with a knee injury but he is looking really good (and been named captain after only attending training camp!). Everytime I watched him play as a Shark I was impressed with him. Definitely a guy I'd want on my team. In January, I believe, the Sabres are heading out to Dallas to play the Stars and that's going to be one game I'm going to make it a point to try to see this season. Its my goal to not miss their games whenever they're in town. It'll be a little more difficult, as I'm going to be moving to Dallas next week and need to learn the area, but at least I'll still get the opportunity to go to NHL games. I was hoping to make it to that Sabres game in Dallas also, but due to it being on a Tuesday or Thursday (can't remember which, Sabres and Thrashers are there around the same time one on a Tuesday and the other on a Thursday) I won't be able to make either game. Living 2 hours away, I pretty much will be limited to weekend games since I would have to be at work the following morning.
ZoomZoom18
I believe its on a Thursday night. I was thrilled that the Sabres were going to be in Dallas this year, as I'll obviously be missing their appearance in Phoenix. I'm thinking its on January 15th. I'm interested to see if the Sabres get the same kind of turnout in Dallas that they do in Phoenix. Weird story about the Sabres... When I was in the AF and working on the flightline one late night here in AZ, I was finishing up my duties in one area and looked over to see a guy in a black Mike Peca Sabres jersey being escorted by a military member on the flightline. I thought that was pretty cool.

Sabres fan travel hard but the real reason they show up is because so many have moved away from Buffalo (including me). There are a ton in the Charlotte area and here in Gotham so those games always bring the presence. I am going to see them play tonight in Jersey, I love the arena and the food selections and I am expecting a strong contingent to show up (looking at recent Devils games, it seems they can't give tickets away what with all the empty seats). To date my favorite hockey experience was my first NHL game in Buffalo in 2000. I spent probably 30 minutes in the Sabres store in the time leading up to the game after my dad and I had arrived at HSBC Arena from Niagara Falls. I settled on a Curtis Brown home jersey after debating between him, Max, and Doug Gilmour. My dad and I had to sit separate, he was two rows behind me and I remember getting popcorn tossed at me from Maple Leafs fans sitting a few rows back. The Sabres won the game over the Leafs, 2-1, and when we got back in Niagara Falls from Buffalo, I still had the Brown jersey on and was going back to the hotel room when a group of Leafs fans spotted me from a balcony above as I was going back into the hotel. They had been partying and watching the game and when they saw me in the Buffalo jersey the entire group of about 4-5 guys just stopped at stared. I guess I had killed their party. It was a fun experience overall. When I saw the Blackhawks a few years ago in 2003, the experience just wasn't the same, but this was also at the height of the Blackhawks era of futility. lafountain
Well during the Center Ice preview I only got to see one Sabres game. Tonight I get to watch the game against the Devils on Versus. I hope I like what I see of the team.
SabreFaninNYC
Great story! The Sabs looked good last night. Not 60 minutes good but good nonetheless. The arena attendance was terrible! It was really an embarrassment for a professional sport. It made me feel like I was watching an Albany Choppers game, yeesh! Rivet is clearly the engine that drives his team. The entire blueline played better even when he wasn't on the ice and I think for the Sabs to be successful this year, its not the talent, its their ability to stay healthy which will be important. lafountain
So it would appear that the Sabres have slipped up a bit since their hot start. Hope they can get back to how they started the season.
SabreFaninNYC
So it would appear that the Sabres have slipped up a bit since their hot start. Hope they can get back to how they started the season. Until that recent 2 game win stretch, it was pretty dark days for Buffalo sports fans. There is a LOT of talk about benching, trading, waiving the guys for the AHL guys. It will be interesting to see if anything happens along these lines before the trade deadline. This team is clearly trying to position itself for the next few years but this year is not a lost cause yet!
SabreFaninNYC
Well, I thought I would restart this thread, especially after the Sabs insane 5-1-1 start. I thought they would be better then last year but no better than 6-8 in the East. Right now, visions of 3rd or higher dance in my head. Amazingly what I think has inspired this turnaround is one the defense (completely shored up with the Myers kid) and two shooting on net. Even if the pucks aren't going in the Sabs are getting pressure through the shots which is great. Its a long long season but I am certainly enjoying this surprising start! lafountain
I am quite happy with how the team has performed this year (though in the one loss, how can you leave Kovalchuk of all people that wide open for both of his goals). I completely admit that I did not have the highest of expectations for this season as I was not confident in the defense at all, but they have surprised me quite a bit, and I am glad that at least this early in the year that I was wrong. ZoomZoom18
That was an interesting game last night. I liked Myers getting the GWG in the shootout. I was enjoying the last night of my Center Ice Free Preview and unfortunately missed Stafford scoring the tying goal. I will say over the course of the last few weeks I've enjoyed listening the the Sabres broadcast team.

A few things I like about the broadcast team (despite my "homerness"), one the voice, its distinctive and has great calls. Secondly, I LOVE the fact that its simulcast on tv and radio. I hate, hate listening to the Vs. announcers (Doc especially) talk about random stories as the play is going on and then being "interrupted" when a goal is scored. The Sabres have it right in that respect.

The three of them seem like they have great chemistry together. They went to the old guy (Harry?) at the intermission and he was going into detail about what the Sabres did during the period. I thoroughly enjoyed the Sabres feed whenever I could catch them. Are they normally on MSG? My wife and I are thinking about adding Premium sports stations to our Direct TV package and I believe that MSG is one of them. How often are they broadcast on MSG? Ralph Strangis and Darryl (Razor) Reaugh are the Stars team and they do the simulcast on the radio and TV. Razor was also on the Vs. broadcasts during the postseason. I've grown to really like their pairing. Its amazing how much a broadcast team can make or break a hockey game. Drew Remenda and Randy Hahn in San Jose are another good team. Yup, that is the regular pairing. MSG really does a great pre-game, in-game and post-game shows for the Sabres. I would be careful about getting the feed on Direct TV as I suspect its MSG from New York. They run the same commercials (oddly since when do Buffalo people care what show is going on in the Garden) but the Buffalo MSG is where the Sabres reside. All their games (except the Vs. ones) are on MSG. That other duo you mentioned sounds great. I will have to check em out on CI one of these days. I'm glad you mentioned that, I think my only option would be MSG New York City. I would be able to see Devils, Rangers, and Islanders games but that doesn't help when I'd like to be able to watch the Sabres more. Hopefully Direct TV and Vs. will get their little fight dealt with sooner rather than later, that's already cost me the end of the IndyCar season. Drew and Randy are on the NHL 2K10 video game doing the voice over work. Razor and Ralph are good, they're on FSN SW right now, the Stars are playing the Maple Leafs. SabreFaninNYC
Any thoughts on this hit by Mac last night? Personally (and this has NOTHING to do with my allegiances) I think it was just a bad play and bad result with both of them playing the body for the puck. I can't for the life of me see an intent to injure or even a reckless play that has become common place in the NHL. Thoughts? http://www.diebytheblade.com/2009/11/12/11...heel-of-justice
